PINE Firmware Update Guide

Firmware Update Guide (English)

Before you start with the process of updating your controller to the newest firmware, please download and read our Update Guide that will help you with the steps to take.

Important to keep in mind is that the PINE Controller is completely unfunctional once it is in Firmware Update Mode (after resetting it through the App). Only after a new firmware has been loaded onto the controller, it will boot up again.

Before resetting the PINE controller via the app, please install the appropriate updater programs and make sure that they can be started without errors.

Firmware Updater for Windows

With this tool, you can update the firmware of the PINE Controller.

Please read through the Update Guide before you start with the update process. Also, please check if you can install and start the updater utility program before resetting the controller over the app.

Choose to update the controller with the newest firmware that is directly stored on our server, or download the firmware files below and load them onto the controller.

If you are using Windows 10, you should have no problems with the update process.
For older Windows PCs, you might need additional USB drivers so that the updater utility detects the PINE controller. You can download the appropriate driver here.

Mac OS X

Firmware Updater for Mac OS X (BOSSA)

With the BOSSA tool you can update the firmware of the PINE controller via a MAC computer.

BOSSA is an external update program which was not developed by Black Forest Motion.

Depending on the MAC OS version, error messages may occur during the installation of BOSSA. A solution for this can be found in the Firmware Update section of the PINE manual.

Always make sure you have the newest firmware installed on your PINE Controller to get access to new features and a better overall user experience.

Only install the Pre-Production versions if you purchased our early Pre-Production units over our Kickstarter campaign.
Only install the PINE LITE versions if you have a 2-Axes PINE LITE Controller.

When using the Firmware Updater Utility, only the most recent firmware file will be accessible from the server. If you want to install a previous release, download the files below and upload them to the Controller using the “Update from File” option of the updater software.

This release brings new features to the 360-Degree Mode (most recent apps required).

360-Degree Mode:

  • Now allows for higher number of rows and columns (no limitation of 4 rows and 9 columns anymore)
  • Zenith image (at vertical 90 degrees pointing up to the sky) can be omitted by setting the number of pictures for row 1 to zero
  • Number of Zenith and Nadir images is not limited anymore (can be set to any value)
  • Option to set whether the Pan & Tilt Head should move back to the zenith position or remain at the nadir position at the end of the shooting pattern (can be set under the “Pattern” settings)

This release, together with the most recent App updates, enables the following features:

  • Focus-Stacking Support for 3D-Scan Mode.
    Together with our lens motor unit, multiple focus pictures can be taken for each turntable position. You need to set 2 keyframes for the focus motor (beginning and ending point) to set the total focus range. Then you can specify the number of focus pictures for that range. Intermediate focus positions will be linearly interpolated based on focus range and number of pictures.

This release, together with the most recent App updates, enables the following features:

  • New “Continuous Matrix Traversal” for Giga-Pixel Mode. Images will be taken row by row while the camera is moving in a continuous pan movement (rather than stopping after each image like in R-L-R and Diagonal traversal). This will significantly reduce recording time for a Giga-Pixel Panorama as lower interval times are possible. This traversal type is suitable for short shutter speeds of 1/1000s and shorter.
  • New “Custom Row Setup” for 3D-Scan Mode. Now you can define the motor positions for each single vertical row manually by adding multiple keyframes. You can still switch over to the regular “Simple Row Setup” option where you only need to set 2 keyframes for “View Above” and “View Below”, together with the number of vertical rows. In this case, intermediate row positions will be linearly interpolated.
  • Slave Mode for 3D-Scan Mode. This allows you to control the image capturing from an external trigger device utilizing the AUX input of the PINE Controller. Each time the controller receives an input from the AUX port, the controller will trigger the camera and move the motors one step.
  • Universal Firmware File for each of the various PINE Models. You can now upload the same firmware file to regular PINE Controllers and LITE Controllers (for V1.4 and up only)

V1.2 brings improvements to the 360-degree mode (please make sure to download the newest app releases).

  • A newly developed movement algorithm will reduce the total time needed for one 360-degree sphere.
  • Option to set 2 Nadir pictures. Those 2 images will be rotated by 45 degrees to each other and allow for easier masking-out of the tripod and pan/tilt head.
  • We added an optional firmware file for lower default currents. Use this firmware if you are using PINE with motors smaller than NEMA17 which require less current. Default current will be set to 0.2A after power-on of the controller. You can set higher currents at any time via the app.

For PINE LITE users, only use the firmware dedicated for the LITE version of the controller.

V1.1 for Pre-Production

V1.1 brings minor improvements mostly related to the 3D-Scan mode.

  • Optimized motor movements (slider getting stuck in rare cases due to too high speeds has been eliminated)
  • Added reverse scan feature. With the new app release, this feature allows for scans in reversed direction once a scan has been finished. This makes the workflow significantly faster.
